COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE

IN A GROUP OF 8, WE WERE REQUIRED TO CHOOSE A TOPIC AND WORK TOGETHER TO UNDERSTAND THE COMMUNITY AROUND US AND ENHANCING THE SELECTED SITE. ME AND MY GROUPMATES DECIDED TO CHOOSE RAINBOW HOME, CHERAS AS OUR SITE TO CARRY OUT THIS PROJECT. 

E-JOURNAL WEEKLY PROGRESS

WEEK 1
​
ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS, LECTURER BRIEFED US ON THE MODULE OUTLINE, TASK AND RUBRICS. WE ARE REQUIRED TO FORM A GROUP OF 8 AND CHOOSE ONE OF THE TOPICS FROM THE LIST THAT WERE GIVE. AFTER A SHORT DISCUSSION WITH MY GROUP MEMBERS, JACK TOO MUN FAI, LEE PUI SAN, FONG TZE YING, TANG ZE ZHENG, TAN WEI ZHEN AND FONG LIH WEY, OUT INITIAL IDEA WAS TO CHOOSE OCBC PROJECT AS WE GET THE CHANCE TO INVOLVE IN BIG CORPORATION COMPANY'S PROJECT AND EXPOSE OURSELVES.

WEEK 2
​
WE HELD A SHORT MEETING TI DISCUSS AND ANALYSE EACH OF THE TOPIC. AFTER THE DISCUSSION, WE FINALLY DECIDED TO UNDERTAKE OCBC PROJECT IN KEPONG. THEN, WE SCHEDULED OUT THE PROJECT REQUIREMENTS AND PROJECT TIMELINE. AS MOST OF US ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE SITE, WE WERE PLANNING TO PAY A VISIT TO THE SITE ON WEEK 3 TO EXPLORE THE AREA AND CHOOSE WHERE ARE WE GOING TO CARRY OUT THIS PROJECT.

WEEK 3

​

ALL OF US WENT TO PAY A VISIT TO KEPONG AND EXPLORED SOME OF THE COMMUNITY AREA. WE FOUND OUT THAT THE GIVEN SITE IS TOO BIG AND WE DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO CHOOSE AS WE ALL ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE PLACE. ANOTHER CONCERN IS WE THINK THAT IT IS A BIT TROUBLESOME AS COMPARED TO OTHER TOPICS BECAUSE WE HAVE TO LIAISE WITH A FEW PARTIES AND ALSO DUE TO OUR PACT SCHEDULE. WE HELD A SHORT MEETING AFTER THE SITE VISIT TO DISCUSS ON THE ISSUES THAT WE ARE FACING. AFTER THE MEETING, WE HAVE DECIDED TO CHANGE OUR TOPIC TO ORPHANAGE COMMUNITY SERVICE.

WEEK 4

​
AFTER WEEK 3, WE HELD A SHORT DISCUSSION AGAIN TO DISCUSS THE LOCATION OF THIS PROJECT. WE FOUND A FEW OPTIONS FROM THE NET AND CONTACTED THE ORPHANAGES TO ASK FOR THEIR PERMISSIONS. THEN, WE DECIDED TO CARRY OUT OUR PROJECT IN RAINBOW HOME, WHICH IS LOCATED AT CHERAS AND MADE APPOINTMENT WITH THE PERSON IN CHARGE TO PAY A VISIT ON NEXT WEEK. AFTER THE DISCUSSION, WE CAME OUT WITH OUR INITIAL CONCEPT IDEA OF DOING FOLDING FURNITURE. THE REASON WHY WE DOING FOLDING FURNITURE IS BECAUSE IT IS SPACE SAVING, USERS FRIENDLY AND EASY TO CARRY.

WEEK 5

​

WE PAID A VISIT TO RAINBOW HOME AND TALKED TO THE CARETAKERS AND ORPHANS. WE FOUND OUT THAT THE CHILDREN THERE HAVE LIMITED OUTDOOR SEATING AND WE WISH TO IMPROVE THE SITUATION SO THAT THE CHILDREN CAN HAVE ENOUGH SEATING WHEN THEY ARE CONDUCTING OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES. AFTER THE SHORT VISIT TO RAINBOW HOME, WE DID A BRIEF SITE ANALYSIS TO IDENTIFY THE STRENGTH, WEAKNESS, OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS OF THE SITE. OUR SITE CONDITIONS ARE STATED AS BELOW:

  • SUN PATH IS PARALLEL TO THE SITE, THE SITE IS EXPOSED TO MORNING SUN AND NATURAL ELEMENTS.

  • LACK OF CHILDREN FRIENDLY FURNITURE.

  • HAMMOCK STYLE ROOF DESIGN DOES NOT PROVIDE PROTECTION FROM RAIN

  • LACK OF SHADING FROM WIND, SUN AND RAIN

  • INSUFFICIENT OUTDOOR SEATING

WEEK 6

​

AFTER LISTING DOWN THE ISSUES THAT THEY FACING, WE CAME OUT WITH A PROPOSAL TO BUILD AN INTERACTIVE BENCH TO PROVIDE THEM A SHADED FOLDABLE BENCH WHICH ALLOWS HUMAN INTERACTION, ENCOURAGING THE CHILDREN TO CONDUCT MORE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES. WE THINK THAT AN INTERACTIVE BENCH IS MORE INTERESTING COMPARED TO OUR PREVIOUS IDEA WHICH IS THE FOLDING FURNITURE. THE NEXT STEP IS TO FIGURE OUT THE DIMENSION AND THE APPROPRIATE SCALE FOR THE BENCH TO FIT INTO THE SITE. AFTER SPENDING SOME TIME BRAIN STORMING AND FINDING EXAMPLES FROM THE INTERNET, THESE ARE THE DESIGN FEATURES THAT WE CAME UP WITH:

  • THE BENCH FOR THE ORPHANAGE IS SPECIFICALLY BASED ON THE ERGONOMICS OF THE CHILDREN IN RAINBOW HOME

  • FOLDABLE BENCH PROVIDES SPACE-EFFICIENT FOR THE ORPHANAGE AND ALLOW CHILDREN TO EASILY DEPLOY THE FURNITURE WITHOUT ASSISTANCE

  • FOLDED BENCH IS EASILY INSTALLED INTO PLATFORM, WHICH CAN ACCOMMODATE MORE CHILDREN

  • CORRUGATED ZINC ROOF PROVIDES PROTECTION FROM THE SUN AND RAIN

WEEK 7

​

WE SPLIT THE DUTIES AMONG OURSELVES AND PREPARE THE INFORMATION NEEDED FOR THE EXECUTION OF 3D MODEL. AFTER A SHORT MEETING SESSION, WE IDENTIFIED AND SOLVED THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS FOR OUR BENCH. THEN WE START TO BUILD OUR 3D MODEL AND PROJECT THE ORTHOGRAPHIC DRAWING FROM THE 3D MODEL THAT WE HAVE DONE. WE HAD TO PREPARE AN A0 BOARD FOR OUR POSTER SUBMISSION. TO ENSURE THAT OUR BOARD CAN CLEARLY CONVEY OUR DESIGN INTENTION TO EVERYONE, WE DECIDED TO INCLUDE SITE INTRODUCTION, SITE ANALYSIS, SITE ISSUES, DESIGN INTENTION, MATERIAL CHOICES, ORTHOGRAPHIC DRAWINGS, RENDERED PERSPECTIVES, ANTHROPOMETRIC AND DESIGN FEATURES IN OUR BOARD.

WEEK 8

​

ON WEEK 8, WE HAD MAKE A STUDY MODEL WITH THE SCALE 1:5 TO ENSURE THAT THE DESIGN IS WORKABLE, SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN AND USING THE CORRECT METHOD OF INSTALLATION. AGAIN, WE SPLIT OUR TASKS AMONG OURSELVES AND REFINE THE BENCH DESIGN WHILE MAKING THE PHYSICAL MODEL.

WEEK 9

​

HONG DA AND I HAD A SMALL DISCUSSION ON THE CONTENT OF THE VIDEO BEFORE THE SITE VISIT. BOTH OF US HAVE DECIDED TO CONSIST SITE INTRODUCTION, SITE ANALYSIS, SITE ISSUES, OUTCOME LOOK OF OUR MODEL AND FEED BACK THAT WE GET FROM THE CHILDREN THAT ARE LIVING IN RAINBOW HOUSE INTO OUR VIDEO. SOME OF US REVISITED THE SITE FOR VIDEO RECORDING, SOME DID THE FINAL BOARD AND SOME DID THE VIDEO EDITING AND FINAL VIDEO COMPILATION.

THIS PROJECT HAS MADE ME REALIZED THE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AS AN ARCHITECTURE STUDENT. IT WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR ME TO EXPOSED TO THE REAL LIFE COMMUNITY PROBLEMS AND USE OUR KNOWLEDGE THAT WE HAVE LEARN ALL THESE WHILE TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY LIVING CONDITION. LIKE WHAT OUR PARENTS HAVE ALWAYS MENTIONED ABOUT, FROM THE SOCIETY, TO THE SOCIETY. WE HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO PUT BACK WHAT WE HAVE TAKEN OUT FROM THE SOCIETY.
