PRECEDENT STUDY & ANALYSIS

LINCOLN CATHEDRAL, ENGLAND (GOTHIC STYLE)

For this module, students are required to form a group of 5-6. Each group have to conduct precedent study analysis on a historical significant building that have given through on-line forum discussion, analysis drawings and board presentation. From this study, we have learned to produce building analysis which consists of document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships.

A: On-line Group Forum

We are required to select one set of questions and gather all the architectural information that we have found. All the discussion must be posted in TIMES Wiki Space in the form of clear and legible photographs and scanned sketches, and write-up. This discussion is to let us have in-depth understanding of the building systems at work, as well as recognize the series of important elements that realize design aspects of the building.

B: Precedent Study & Analysis Sketches Presentation and Analysis Report

For the report, each of us is required to choose another set of questions and include all the analysis into the report. Findings must be consist of illustrative and abstractive diagrams, drawings and text. In addition, the drawings should include actual and conceptual design ideas of Floor plans, building sections, analysis diagrams and sketches expressing clarity and in-depth investigation of the precedent studies.

This project focuses on investigating historical works to enrich architectural design and ideas. Through this assignment, i was introduced to basic architectural theory through a consideration of intentions, concept, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships. Besides, I have learned to produce graphical development, expansion and elaboration of intentions, concepts, patterns. disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships as integration to design project. It is an interesting study, it let me know more about gothic architecture, one of the beautiful architectures.
